Sundaram N. Kumar (Ph.D., Director of Technology & Business Development)
Dr. Sundaram (Sandy) Kumar joined Alpha Circuit Corporation, Chicago, IL as director of technology in July 2017. He completed his Ph.D. in thin film technology/materials science on solar energy conversion from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi in 1985 and then started his research (as charge de recherche) and teaching (as professor of materials science) career on semiconductor device fabrication at Ecole Centrale de Lyon and INSA Lyon, France in July 1985. He moved to Ottawa, Canada in March 1990 as a research guest scientist at the National research Council of Canada, Ottawa working on aerospace materials and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) space protection materials for a Canadian Space Agency/NASA project from March 1990 to February 1994.
He started his career in the PCB industry as R&D manager in February 1994 at Filtran Microcircuits, Ottawa, Canada (later acquired by FTG, CA) and then worked as a senior wet process engineer at Honeywell Electronic Materials, in Costa Mesa, CA from June 1998 until July 2000, when the PCB division closed. After moving to Chicago in 2000, he worked as a process engineering manager at Price Printed Circuits, Inc. and as director of technology at American Standard Circuits (ASC), Chicago. At ASC he started the R&D work on thermal management materials and advanced RF circuit fabrication technology by installing a magnetron sputtering system for blind hole metallization and then worked as director of ultra-high density mask making for display devices for cell phone and augmented reality technologies at Advantech, Pittsburgh, PA. He has also invented and developed nano and micron size tool fabrication by electroforming for applications in MEMS, optical display and nano encryption technologies at Avery Dennison and NanoInk in Chicago.
Dr. Kumar is six sigma black-belt trained on remote controlled process automation and optimization. He has published over 60 research papers, white paper, book chapter, conference proceedings, invited technical conference talk and three patents on thin film technologies. Don Stephens (Quality Manager)
Don joined Alpha Circuit Corporation about six years ago. He began his professional career in 1962 in a PCB shop now called Midwest Printed Circuit Services, Inc. in Round Lake Beach, IL. He then worked in the plating department at the above printed circuit shop until January, 1966. From January1966 through May 1969, he served in the United States Air Force. He got basic technical training at Air Force Base, Strategic Air Command, 15th Air Force, and 90th Strategic Missile Wing at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming and worked there until he got discharged from active duty in May 1969. He graduated from Warren Township High School in 1964.
Don has been in the PCB industry for more than 45 years and has worked on almost every process of PCB fabrication from CAM to shipping department. During his long tenure in the PCB industry he held various positions starting from supervisory roles in wet process, imaging and multilayer bonding departments to the positions of operations manager, production manager, engineering manager and quality manager.
